Sheffield College Students Expand Their Horizons with HeppSY+

Wednesday 12th December 2018

Sheffield College students have been learning about the possibilities of higher education, through an initiative supported by HeppSY+.

At the beginning of November, students at the college enjoyed a busy week of activity with universities from across the region and further afield visiting to talk about the opportunities available at their institutions.

The week was supported by the college’s two HeppSY+ graduate interns, Zoe and Irina, who arranged sessions about student finance, personal statements, student life and much more. This allowed the students to pick areas that interested them or where they had questions or queries.

Also in attendance from HeppSY+ was, Higher Education Progression Adviser, Gideon and our mobile classroom where students could hop on board for impartial information.

A parents’ event aimed at addressing concerns and misinformation was held as part of the week. The event received great feedback, with 100% saying they found the session useful and many commenting that their knowledge of higher education had increased due to the information being delivered.

Zoe, HeppSY+ Higher Education Engagement Assistant, said: “All the sessions during the week had a great vibe. The students were enthusiastic and curious about topics being discussed. Our guests, including University of Salford, Sheffield Hallam University and Nottingham Trent University, all expressed their appreciation for the students’ engagement and interest in their future. It seems that our students not only reflected on their future options beforehand, but also decided to make the most of the week!”

Continuing, Zoe said: “One student, who previously wasn’t interested in higher education, had spoken to a representative at Teesside University and as a result had changed her mind about applying to university.”
