HEPA Blog: Including Careers and LMI in the Curriculum – A focus on Gatsby 2 and 4.

In 2014, a report produced by the Gatsby Foundation, ‘The Good Career Guidance Report’, set out eight benchmarks that schools could use as a framework for improving their careers provision.

The eight benchmarks for schools and colleges are:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from Career and Labour Market Information (LMI)
  3. Addressing the needs of each student
  4. Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

The aim is that all schools and colleges achieve the eight benchmarks by 2020 (ideally with 100% coverage).

If each school and college has a stable careers programme backed by appropriate senior management, this makes the rest of the benchmarks easier to tackle. Few schools are stating that they have completely met this benchmark.

Some of the other benchmarks are proving more challenging than others to achieve including ‘Learning from Careers and Labour Market Information (LMI) – (Benchmark 2) and Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers – (Benchmark 4).

Learning from the Careers and Labour Market Information (BM2)

Headlines – All students and parents should have access to high quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities.

By the age of 14, all students should have accessed and used information about career paths and the labour market to inform their own career decisions.

They will need the support of an informed adviser to make the best use of available information.

Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers (BM4)

Headlines – All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers.

Each school or college should recognise that the reach of subject teaching is far reaching than what can be achieved through a few careers education sessions.

Schools should adopt a strategic approach to linking curriculum learning to careers and develops a coherent rationale for embedding careers in subject learning.

Top tips – some easy wins to introduce careers in the curriculum;

Remember to record any evidence to inform your Compass self-evaluation. It’s also important to see how the benchmarks can inform and support each other – rather than view them as separate parts of a list.
